Nonapeptide-1 is an active peptide-containing of nine amino acids. Its main role in cosmetics and skincare products is whitening and freckle. It has a very good match with the MC1 receptor on melanocytes, so it can be used as an antagonist of the melanocyte-stimulating hormone to competitively bind to the MC1 receptor and prevent tyrosinase from being further activated to produce melanin. Most of the existing whitening ingredients inhibit the production of melanin by decreasing the activity of tyrosinase. While, Nonapeptide-1 works on the source of melanin production, making the skin white and bright from the origin before the tyrosinase activity is activated.
