Calcium propionate is a safe and reliable anti-mildew agent for food and feed approved by the World Health Organization(WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Calcium propionate, like other fats, can be absorbed by humans and animals through metabolism and supply necessary calcium, which is incomparable to other anti-mildew agents and is considered as GRAS.
Calcium propionate is a white light flake crystal, or white particles or powder. It has a special smell and is easy to dissolve in moist air. In starch, protein and oil substances, calcium propionate has an inhibitory effect on mold and aerobic Bacillus, which can cause the formation of mucous silk in bread, and is effective on Gram-negative bacteria and aflatoxin, but has no inhibitory effect on yeast. The lower the pH value, the higher the antiseptic efficacy. Calcium propionate is almost non-toxic to the human body. Used in cosmetics as antiseptic thorns, the maximum allowable concentration is 2% (in terms of propionic acid). Propionic acid is used as raw material and neutralized by calcium hydroxide.
